Danny Newman's Hot Spots

So, you are now the JCSC Fellow at University at Albany.  How do you get started?  What should you do next?

  • Have Aviva show you around campus and at the same time, introduce you to some of the key university staff members to know.  The summer is the best time to do this because the university is relatively calm!

NOTE:  You should know how to describe your position to the different people that you meet (for example would you give the same summary to staff members, parents, students, peers, etc.?)

  • Take care of any documentary items (i.e. get a SUNY-card with some money on it, a parking sticker (if necessary), and a Hillel credit card).
  • Sit with Aviva and decide your target groups and goals for the upcoming year.  These will help guide you in the things that you need to start doing.
  • Meet with the student leaders that are here during the summer.  Try to get a feel for what these students want to see in the upcoming year and just get to know them.
  • Familiarize yourself with the structure and function of the different Albany Jewish student groups.  Knowing what each of these groups do and who their leadership is will help you incredibly as the semester gets under way.
  • Familiarize yourself with answers to questions that parents and freshmen students might ask when they arrive.  You will be asked about meal plans(especially the Kosher meal plan), Hillel's provisions on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and upcoming programs (make sure to look at the calendar!)
  • Learn university policies for things like getting poster approval, reserving space, and booking tables.  You will need these things for yourself and to help guide the student leaders.
